Frogweb: Volunteer Monitoring Efforts

Are you concerned about the health and status of your local amphibian populations? Get involved by volunteering for one of the monitoring efforts listed below!

There are 4 resources available.

1. Frog Notes
Resource Identifier: http://frogweb.nbii.gov/getinvolved/frognotes.html
Cataloging Node: NBII Program Office
Creator: National Biological Information Infrastructure
Subject: amphibians, population status, population decline, malformations, monitoring, public awareness, environmental education
Uncontrolled Keywords: citizen science
Description: The Frog Notes Program is a forum for Frogweb visitors to share anecdotal information about their local amphibian populations. Since 1998, users have submitted information about the status and health of their neighborhood amphibians. Whether those populations are healthy or in decline, the reports give Frogweb users a better sense of how amphibians are doing in very localized settings. Visitors to Frogweb are encouraged to share their local amphibian observations through the Frog Notes submission form.

2. Frogwatch USA
Resource Identifier: http://www.nwf.org/frogwatchUSA/
Cataloging Node: NBII Program Office
Creator: National Wildlife Federation; United States Geological Survey Patuxent Wildlife Research Center
Subject: amphibians, population status, population decline, public awareness, environmental education, monitoring, surveys, volunteers, community involvement, habitats, identification, taxonomy, vocalization behavior
Uncontrolled Keywords: citizen science
Description: Frogwatch USA is a long-term frog and toad monitoring program managed by the National Wildlife Federation in partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey. Frogwatch USA relies on volunteers to collect information regarding frog and toad populations in neighborhoods across the nation. Volunteers learn to recognize the calls of their local frogs, and submit observation data during specific times of the year. The data collected, accessible on the Web site, provides valuable information about frog and toad distributions, population trends at individual wetlands, and yearly patterns of frog and toad breeding activity.

3. North American Reporting Center for Amphibian Malformations ( NARCAM )
Resource Identifier: http://frogweb.nbii.gov/narcam/
Cataloging Node: NBII Program Office
Creator: National Biological Information Infrastructure; University of Georgia, Savannah River Ecology Lab; United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
Subject: amphibians, population status, population decline, malformations, monitoring, databases, mapping, geographic information systems
Uncontrolled Keywords: citizen science, datasets, point data, occurrence data
Description: NARCAM collects, archives, and visualizes malformed amphibian phenomena reported in the United States and Canada. Professional scientists, naturalists, and concerned citizens can report on the health of amphibian species observed, and can view data and point occurrence maps from other reporters. While NARCAM seeks data about all amphibian sightings, it is known especially as a reporting system for malformed amphibian malformations. All submissions to NARCAM are peer reviewed by professional herpetologists before they are available for public view.
